Time Traveler Tours & Tales Signs Award-Winning Author to Launch its List

Mary Hoffman to Collaborate with the International Digital Start-Up

(LONDON, Monday, 23 March) – Time Traveler Tours & Tales, a newly launched digital-first, multi-platform publisher dedicated to bringing the past to life for children and teens, is pleased to announce that internationally renowned author Mary Hoffman is the first writer to join its ranks with In The Footsteps Of Giants (2016), an interactive story-based quest through Renaissance Florence. And Hoffman, who has transported readers to Renaissance Italy with her acclaimed Stravaganza series, is the perfect companion for this start-up whose mission is to make history exciting.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to have Mary Hoffman by my side as we embark on this new publishing adventure,” says Publisher Sarah Towle. “Her participation is the best possible validation that we’re onto something with the Time Traveler Tours & Tales concept, mission, and vision. My daughter, a huge Stravaganza fan, is possibly even more chuffed than I am!”

Narrated by Michelangelo’s invented “milk brother” and model for the colossal statue, In the Footsteps of Giants promises a radical unveiling of the making of the David. It’s an intimate view of a genius, whose brilliance flourished on the mean streets of the de’ Medici. Emma D. Dryden of drydenbks, who has worked with such award-winning and bestselling authors as Ellen Hopkins, Karma Wilson, Susan Cooper, and Cornelia Funke, will edit the project.

“We are all of us living in history – we just don’t know it,” says Hoffman, “just as Michelangelo was when he unveiled his masterpiece in 1503. I wanted to create a story-based quest through Renaissance Florence that evokes the feeling of seeing something so extraordinary as his giant sculpture for the very first time. Who better to do this with than a visionary imprint passionate about making its own unique mark in history, despite being surrounded by giants?”

In addition to sharing a love for history and storytelling, Hoffman and Towle both boast backgrounds in linguistics and literature, each spending time in literacy education before migrating to writing full time. Hoffman has been a freelance, self-employed writer since the mid-80s. She writes across the age span, and has published over 100 books, including the four picture books and three storybooks in the Grace series, which have together sold over a million and a half copies. Besides being longlisted for the Carnegie award with a couple of the Stravaganza titles, her first historical novel, The Falconer’s Knot, was shortlisted for The Guardian Children's Book and North East Teenage Book Awards, as was Troubadour for the Costa. She won the School Library Association’s first Information Book Award with The Great Big Book of Families, illustrated by Ros Asquith and was nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2011. Hoffman and Towle will both be at the 2015 Bologna Children’s and London Book Fairs and are available for interviews.

Time Traveler Tours & Tales is an up-and-coming digital-first, multi-platform publishing imprint dedicated to bringing the past to life for children and youth. The company mission is to ensure that no child ever says history is boring again. TTT&T does this by marrying the traditional power of narrative storytelling with the latest in digital technology to make history leap from the screen at the tips of the fingers. Guided by real historical characters, reader/users become witness to history, discovering yesteryear’s most seminal moments in the company of those who made it.

The hallmark concept of Time Traveler Tours & Tales is the title suite: each story adapted across the mobile, tablet, audio, and print formats to give it the broadest possible reach. The first title suite in the TTT&T library, Beware Madame La Guillotine, A Revolutionary Tour Of Paris, launched to raves in 2011 as a French-English bilingual StoryApp Tour for educational tourism. It was subsequently published as an interactive eBook for the school and library market, and came out last year in print. In The Footsteps Of Giants will launch as a mobile Story App Tour and in digital, audio, and paperback editions.
